Green New Deals and Degrowth
What about Degrowth and Green New Deals?
In the past few years, Green New Deals (GNDs) have become a central focus of debates on how to initiate a comprehensive transformation towards just and ecologically sustainable futures. While the history of the GNDs show variegated ideological underpinnings, social movements are appropriating the concept and making their own variants of it.
GND-inspired programmes proposed at multiple scales promise new coalitions and solidarities. Yet some commentators have asked critical questions about whether the GND is ultimately capable of overcoming the colonial and growth-fixated tendencies of capitalist development.
This Key Conversation (conference stream) is envisioned as a space to critically engage with the GND from a degrowth perspective, exploring potential tensions and convergences, and to build foundations for mutual learning and allyship.
It will include a plenary roundtable organized by the conference’s organizing assembly, preceded by a series of dedicated events. We also invite conference participants to self-organize additional roundtable discussions, workshops, assemblies, solution labs, walks, or art exhibitions.
